Most new functionality arrives SWITCHED OFF, and that is the single most useful fact about quarterly updates. It means the update itself is a smaller event than the release notes imply. The pages of new features are things you MAY enable, at a time of your choosing, rather than things that are about to change what users see. Finding what is available is a separate exercise from the risk assessment, and it is worth doing separately: read the notes once for risk — Lesson 1 — and again, later, for opportunity. The two readings have different questions and mixing them produces a document that does neither well. RESIST ENABLING ANYTHING IN THE SAME WINDOW AS THE UPDATE ITSELF.
