An expired certificate, a managed server that RESTARTED NIGHTLY FOR A MONTH, and a browser update that BROKE FORMS. THE EXPIRED CERTIFICATE IS THE PREDICTABLE ONE AND THE ONE THAT IS ALWAYS AN EMERGENCY. It fails on a date visible two years in advance, at midnight, with nobody able to log in. And it is total while every server-side check reports a healthy estate — which is why the first ten minutes go to investigating the application. Lesson 6, and one calendar entry removes it entirely. THE MANAGED SERVER THAT RESTARTED NIGHTLY FOR A MONTH IS THE ONE THAT WENT UNREPORTED. It restarted at 02:00 every night, when almost nobody was on it, so the handful of affected sessions were assumed to be flaky network.
