The two tiers, and why the split matters

Database tier and application tier. What lives where, and THE QUESTIONS THAT ARE ANSWERED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON WHICH ONE YOU ARE STANDING IN. The split is the first thing to hold, because almost every diagnosis in this course begins by deciding which tier you are in. THE DATABASE TIER IS THE ORACLE DATABASE AND ITS FILES. Datafiles, redo, control files, the alert log, the listener. Familiar territory to any DBA and roughly a third of the estate. THE APPLICATION TIER IS EVERYTHING ELSE, AND IT IS LARGER THAN PEOPLE EXPECT. The web and forms servers, the concurrent managers, the application file system with its hundreds of thousands of files, the configuration generated from the context file, and log directories in several places.
