Counts, sums and spot checks — produced BEFORE anybody asks for them. That is the whole discipline, and the timing is half of it. THE COUNT. Rows in the source, rows in the application, and they agree. If they do not, the difference is a list of specific records rather than a number — know which ones. THE SUM. One monetary total, on the same basis, from both sides. A count can match while the amounts are wrong, because a decimal misread or a truncated value does not change how many rows there are. The sum is what catches the corruption from Lesson 4. THE SPOT CHECKS. Three records, opened in the application and compared field by field against the source. Pick the largest, the oldest, and one with a character that could have been mangled — an apostrophe, an Arabic name, a leading zero. Three records is enough to…
