Open items, balances and history are THREE different decisions with three different costs, and most projects migrate more than they need and cannot say why. OPEN ITEMS are not optional. Unpaid invoices, uncollected receivables, undepreciated assets, current employees. The business cannot operate on day one without them, so this is the only category with no decision in it. BALANCES are cheap and lossy. One opening journal per account brings the ledger to the right position with no detail behind it. It is almost always the right answer for closed periods, and the objection to it is always the same: somebody wants to drill. HISTORY is expensive in a way people underestimate. Not the load itself — the mapping, the cleansing, the reconciliation of every period, the decisions about data that no longer conforms to current rules.
