Kestrel Marine makes deck handling equipment for commercial vessels. One legal entity, one country. Three sites. The Fabrication plant cuts, welds and machines steel structures — a hundred and forty staff, two shifts — holding steel stock, WIP, and finished sub-assemblies. The Assembly plant, twenty-four kilometres away, assembles sub-assemblies from Fabrication with purchased hydraulics and electrical parts into finished units — ninety staff, one shift — holding purchased components, WIP, finished goods and a small spares stock. The Central store, adjacent to Assembly, holds bulk purchased components for both plants and consolidates outbound shipments. No manufacturing. A finished deck winch has three levels: purchased components and steel at the bottom, two fabricated sub-assemblies in the middle, the finished winch at the top. One sub-assembly goes out for hot-dip galvanising at a supplier between machining and assembly — a five-day round trip. Steel is bought by weight and issued by length.…
