Purging safely the first time

A purge on an estate that has NEVER BEEN PURGED is NOT A ROUTINE JOB. Sizing it, staging it, and THE UNDO IT WILL CONSUME. The first purge is a project and the routine ones afterwards are a scheduled job, and treating the first as the second is Lesson 8's third failure. THE SCALE IS THE PROBLEM: MILLIONS OF ROWS AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF FILES, IN ONE OPERATION. A routine nightly purge removes a day's worth in minutes. The first one removes years. THE UNDO IS THE PART THAT SURPRISES PEOPLE, AND IT IS WHY THIS CAN TAKE THE SYSTEM DOWN. Every deleted row generates undo and redo — Module 3 Lessons 4 and 6. Deleting millions of rows in one transaction can exhaust the undo tablespace, and it will certainly generate enormous archive volume — which can fill the archive destination and freeze the database.
