Full, incremental and the strategy behind them

What each costs TO TAKE and TO RESTORE FROM. The strategy is A RESTORE-TIME DECISION, not a backup-window one. A full backup copies everything. An incremental copies what changed since a previous backup. That much is obvious; the strategy question is which combination, and it is almost always answered the wrong way round. THE WRONG WAY IS TO OPTIMISE THE BACKUP WINDOW, AND IT IS THE NATURAL WAY BECAUSE THE BACKUP IS WHAT YOU SEE EVERY NIGHT. Incrementals are fast and small, so a strategy of one full and daily incrementals is attractive — the nightly job finishes quickly and storage is cheap. THE RESTORE IS WHERE THAT BILL IS PAID. Restoring from a full plus six incrementals means restoring the full, then applying each incremental in order, then applying archives.
