When the answer is "not a report"

Some requests are not reports, and recognising those early is worth more than any reporting skill in this module. "Can we get a report of what we sent them?" is usually an INTEGRATION. Somebody is reconciling by eye against another system because nothing connects the two. A report makes the eye-work faster; an interface makes it unnecessary. "A report we can paste into the bank's portal" is an EXTRACT, and it has a format specification somebody else owns. Treat it as a file with a contract, not as a document with a layout, or it will be rejected on a character you cannot see. "A report showing which records are missing a value" is a DATA ENTRY problem. You can build it, and it will be run every month forever, and the missing values will keep arriving.
