The four tools and what each is for

Four tools, and each was designed for a different shape of question. BI PUBLISHER produces a DOCUMENT. A query underneath, a layout on top, and an output whose every millimetre you control — an invoice, a payslip, a statement, a fixed-format file a bank will read. It is the only one of the four that can produce something with a required layout, and that is usually the whole reason to choose it. OTBI produces an ANALYSIS. A business user drags attributes from a subject area, filters, pivots, charts, saves. Nobody writes SQL, and the model underneath applies that user's own data security. It is for looking at things and changing your mind, which is most of what people mean when they say "report".
