The most important lesson in the module, and possibly in this phase.
The item master organization is the organization in which items are defined. Items created there are assigned out to the operating organizations that will transact them. One definition, many locations — so a part number means the same thing in every plant, because there is one master record.
The choice: dedicated, or operating? A dedicated master is a non-transacting organization existing only to hold item definitions. An operating organization doubling as the master works — and permanently entangles one plant's data with the enterprise item catalogue. Every item in the business is anchored to a plant that may one day close.
Use a dedicated item master organization. Stated plainly, because this is not a balanced trade-off: it costs nothing, it is cleaner, and the alternative can never be undone. That is as close to a rule as this course gives you.
How many item masters? One, in almost every case. Multiple masters mean the same physical part can exist twice, with different numbers, and no relationship between them — not a reporting inconvenience, but two records the system has no way to know are the same thing. Planning sees two parts. Costing values two parts. Purchasing buys both. Consider more than one only where two parts of the business genuinely share no products and never will — and challenge that assertion hard, because "never will" is a claim about the future made by somebody who does not run the acquisition strategy.
A preview for the items module: some item attributes are defined at master level and are the same everywhere; others are defined per organization, and which is which is a design decision that depends on this structure existing correctly.
And the situation a consultant most often walks into. What if the client already made this choice badly? The options are limited and none of them are good. You can live with it, which is what usually happens; you can re-implement, which nobody funds. There is no third answer, and pretending there is wastes everybody's time. Say so honestly, early, in writing. Then help them live with it well.
