Availability, recoverability, change and performance — IN THAT ORDER, because that is the order in which failing at them costs money. The ordering is the lesson and it is not obvious. Most people ranking a DBA's work put performance high, because performance is what generates the complaints and the interesting problems. It is last here, and the reason is what a failure at each one costs. AVAILABILITY IS FIRST BECAUSE A SYSTEM THAT IS DOWN IS A BUSINESS THAT HAS STOPPED. Nobody is invoicing, nobody is receiving goods, nobody is being paid. Every hour is measurable in money and it is the failure everybody notices immediately.
