An application is A THING THAT MUST BE TESTED EVERY QUARTER FOREVER. Saying that out loud BEFORE THE ESTIMATE, not after the third update. This is the lesson that makes the difference between a consultant and somebody who sells applications, and it is one paragraph in a proposal. THE BUILD IS A ONE-OFF COST AND IT IS THE ONLY ONE ANYBODY QUOTES. Three weeks, a number, a delivery date. The client hears that and budgets for it. THE MAINTENANCE IS PERMANENT AND NOBODY MENTIONS IT. Fusion updates quarterly, and every update can change an API this application depends on — Module 17. So four times a year, forever, somebody has to test this application and possibly fix it, and that is a standing cost the client agreed to without being told. IT IS SMALL PER QUARTER AND IT NEVER STOPS, WHICH IS THE PART THAT IS HARD TO SEE AT
