Implementing Project Portfolio Management: From Organization Structure to Recognized Revenue · Module 10 · Budgeting, Forecasting and Progress
Generating a forecast
Lesson 106 of 198 · 13 min
Generate a forecast version from actuals plus remaining plan, using Module 9's generation options. Review the generated lines, adjust the remaining plan where the project manager knows better, show estimate to complete flowing into the forecast, compare forecast against baseline, submit and approve, then show the forecast history across several months. THE GENERATION STEP IS WHAT MAKES MONTHLY FORECASTING SURVIVABLE. If a project manager has to retype the whole plan, it will not happen. Adjustments are expected. The generated forecast is a starting point, not an answer. FORECAST HISTORY IS THE MOST USEFUL ANALYTICAL ASSET THE BUSINESS WILL HAVE — it shows which project managers forecast accurately. Worth saying out loud; most clients have never had it.
