Currencies and conversion rate types

Lesson 24 of 153 · 11 min

A walkthrough. Enable the currencies the client needs — the full list is long and most currencies are disabled by default, which surprises people. Review the delivered conversion rate types (spot, corporate, user) and when each applies, then create a custom rate type for a real use case, such as a rate fixed by policy for budgeting. Enter daily rates by hand for two currency pairs, then show the spreadsheet upload for bulk rates. Finally, demonstrate what happens when a rate is missing: attempt a foreign currency journal and watch it fail. Automate the daily rate load, or accept a recurring incident. A missing rate stops a journal, an invoice and a payment — every month, forever. This is worth a proper integration rather than a diary reminder. And rate type selection drives which rate a transaction picks up. Getting it wrong produces subtly wrong revaluation, which is the worst
