Why tax is the hardest module

This is the module people fail. Not because it is conceptually deep, but because it has many objects that must all be right simultaneously — and the failure mode is silent. Tax simply does not appear on the invoice, and nothing errors. It is structured the way it is because tax law varies by country, by product, by customer status and by place of supply. The configuration model is complex because the world is. You are not the tax adviser. The client's tax adviser determines the treatment; you configure it. Never invent a tax rate. Both of those are said again before the module ends, deliberately. Four things you must have in writing before configuring anything: registrations per country, rates and their effective dates, recoverability rules, and the treatment for cross-border transactions.
