The environments, and what each is for

Production, test, development, and the ones clients invent — a training pod, a "pre-prod", an environment somebody stood up for a project and never gave back. PRODUCTION is the only one with real transactions in it, and nothing is built there. TEST is where the business validates — UAT, training, and the rehearsal for anything that will later be done in production. DEVELOPMENT is where consultants build and break things. THE DISCIPLINE THAT KEEPS THEM FROM CONVERGING is a rule about DIRECTION. Configuration moves from development to test to production. Data moves the other way, from production to test, by refresh. Anything that moves in another direction — a fix applied straight to production, a configuration built in test because that is where the data was — is how the environments stop being distinguishable.
