Open the business unit and assign business functions. Enable the materials management business function. In the financial reporting region, select the primary ledger and the legal entity, then select the below-legal-entity flag — that is what designates the business unit as a profit center. Save and verify, then show where the profit center business unit is consumed: the inventory organization, and the costing setup two modules later. This one checkbox is the most consequential small action in this phase. Without it, the profit center business unit field on the inventory organization stays blank, and cost accounting setup cannot find the business unit at all — and the failure appears two modules later with no obvious link back.
