Units of measure. The manufacturing calendar. Both look trivial. Both are inputs to every quantity and every date in the system. That is the whole lesson, and the rest of it is what the failures look like — because neither of them fails in a way that says "units of measure" or "calendar" on the screen. UOM failures look like data errors. A BOM component quantity that is out by a factor of a thousand is usually a conversion, not a typo. Somebody will open that BOM, see an absurd number, and correct it by hand. Then it will happen on the next item, and the one after, and nobody will look at the conversion — because the number is wrong on the BOM, so obviously the BOM is wrong.
