Oracle Integration Cloud: Building Integrations That Survive Production · Module 5 · Mappings and transformations

Functions: strings, numbers and dates

Lesson 50 of 175 · 2 min

The functions you will use daily are a short list: concatenation, substring, trim, upper and lower case, a numeric conversion, a date format, and a conditional. Everything else is occasional. TWO CATEGORIES CAUSE SILENT DAMAGE, and they get a lesson each because they deserve one. NUMBER ROUNDING. A function that rounds, truncates or changes scale does so on every record, and the error is small per row and material per month. Truncation in particular is the one that looks harmless — it always loses value in the same direction, so it does not average out. Lesson 8. DATE FORMATTING ACROSS TIME ZONES. A date reformatted through a function may be interpreted in a zone you did not intend, and the result is a value that is right for most of the year and a day out for the rest. Lesson 7. Three habits for functions generally. Test on the boundaries
