Retiring environments

Lesson 48 of 201 · 12 min

Identify unused environments — the criteria and where the evidence is. Then the pre-deletion checklist: backups taken and stored externally, integrations disconnected, users notified, register updated. Delete an environment, show what happens to the data, and show retrieving data after service termination, and its limits. UNUSED ENVIRONMENTS ARE A SECURITY EXPOSURE, NOT JUST A COST. They accumulate users, they do not get patched attention, and nobody is watching them. TAKE AND EXTERNALLY STORE A FINAL BACKUP BEFORE DELETING. Not in the environment you are about to delete. This is obvious, and it is regularly not done. Data retrieval after termination has a window and it is not generous. Know it before you need it. If a client is terminating a service, extract everything first. Deletion is not reversible. Confirm the environment identity from the URL before acting — Lesson 5's habit, applied.
