Segment labels and qualifiers

A segment is just a field until you label it. The label tells the application what the segment means, and that is what unlocks behaviour. Primary balancing segment is the one the system balances every journal against — usually the legal entity or company segment. Mandatory. Natural account segment carries the account type: asset, liability, equity, revenue, expense. It drives what closes at year end and what rolls forward. Mandatory. Cost centre segment is required by Assets and by several reporting features — said now so you do not discover it in Module 11. Intercompany segment enables intercompany balancing: if there is more than one legal entity in the ledger and they transact, you want it. Management segment is optional, for management reporting security and hierarchies. Secondary balancing segment is the fund and grant case, mentioned rather than dwelt on.
