Joins across subject areas, and when you cannot

Combining two subject areas works ONLY where a CONFORMING DIMENSION exists — a dimension both subject areas share, defined the same way in each, such as a common ledger, period or supplier. How to tell in advance: look for the dimension in both, at the same grain, with the same name. If the dimension appears in one and not the other, or appears at a different level, the join is not available — and OTBI will not produce a wrong answer, it will refuse or return nulls, which is the better failure and still a blocked requirement. What to do when the answer is no, in the order worth trying. ONE: look for a third subject area that already contains both. Oracle frequently ships a combined one for exactly the pair people keep asking about, and it is faster than any workaround. TWO: split the question. Two analyses on one…
