What a subject area is

A subject area is a curated, secured view of ONE business process. Payables invoices. General ledger balances. Worker assignments. Facts, dimensions, joins and names, assembled by somebody at Oracle who knew the data model. It exists so that a person who does not know the tables can still ask a correct question. The joins are already made, so nobody accidentally multiplies a total. The security is already applied, so each reader sees their own rows. The names are business language rather than column names, so an analysis is readable by the person who did not build it. WHAT ORACLE GUARANTEES ACROSS UPDATES is a stability of intent rather than a contract. Subject areas are maintained: they gain attributes, occasionally lose one, and are extended when a feature ships.
