When OTBI is the wrong answer

Knowing when to stop and open BI Publisher instead is a skill, and it has three clear triggers. ONE: A FIXED-FORMAT DOCUMENT. Anything where the appearance is part of the requirement — an invoice, a payslip, a certificate, a letter with a logo in a particular place. OTBI can export a table; it cannot produce a document to a specification, and trying produces something everybody agrees is nearly right. TWO: AN EXTERNAL FILE LAYOUT. A file another system parses, with positions and lengths and a specification owned by somebody else. Anything a bank must parse is in this category, and it is eText in BI Publisher — Module 4 — not a spreadsheet export somebody cleans up. THREE: AN ATTRIBUTE THAT DOES NOT EXIST IN ANY SUBJECT AREA.
