What seniority dates are for

A seniority date calculates how long somebody has served — for a specific purpose, under specific rules. That phrase, "for a specific purpose", is the whole lesson. Service for redundancy entitlement. Service for leave accrual. Service for a long-service award. Service for union seniority. Same person, four different numbers, and all four correct. If you take one thing from this module, it is that "how long have they worked here" is not a question with one answer, and a system that stores one answer will be wrong for three purposes. What makes it hard: breaks in service, transfers between legal employers, part-time periods, unpaid leave, rehires, and acquisitions where prior service is contractually honoured. Every one of those is a decision about whether time counts, and the answer differs by purpose and sometimes by country.
