Security: who can see what, and who can do what

Two questions, deliberately separated Fusion security answers two questions independently, and most security confusion comes from treating them as one. Function security decides what a user can do — which pages and actions exist for them. Data security decides which records they can do it to. A line manager and an HR specialist may both hold the ability to view a person's record. What differs is the population: the manager sees their own reports, the specialist sees a business unit. Same function, different data. Grant the function and forget the data, and you have handed someone the whole organisation. The role types Abstract roles describe who somebody is in the organisation, independent of their job — an employee, a line manager, a contingent worker. They carry the access everybody of that kind needs. Job roles describe what somebody does professionally — a human resources specialist, a benefits administrator. Duty roles…
