Absence management: entitlement, accrual and proration

Two ways an entitlement can exist Absence plans divide broadly into two kinds, and confusing them produces balances that look arbitrary. Accrual plans build entitlement over time. The employee earns days as the year progresses. Annual leave is the usual example. Qualification plans grant an entitlement when an event happens and the employee meets conditions — sick leave at a certain rate after a service threshold, or maternity leave. Nothing accumulates; eligibility is tested at the point of absence. Ask which kind a client's policy actually describes before configuring anything. Policies written in natural language routinely mix the two — "30 days per year, but only after six months" is an accrual plan with an eligibility condition, not a qualification plan, and building it as the latter will produce correct-looking balances that drift.
