One human being, several records Fusion separates the human being from their employment, and then separates employment from the work they do. Newcomers often expect one row per employee and are surprised to find three layers. The separation exists because all three genuinely vary independently in real organisations. Person — the human being. Name, date of birth, national identifiers, contact details. One person record however many times they are employed. Work relationship — the relationship between that person and a legal employer. Its type matters: employee, contingent worker, non-worker. Assignment — the actual job: the department, the job or position, the grade, the working hours, the manager. Why the layers earn their complexity A person who leaves and is rehired two years later is the same person. Their qualifications, their national identifier and their history should not be duplicated.
