Building a P&L with comparatives

Lesson 119 of 153 · 15 min

Build the row structure from the hierarchy. Add a prior period column. Add a calculated variance column and a variance percentage column. Apply conditional formatting to the variance. Handle the divide-by-zero case in the percentage — which arrives the first month a line has no prior-period balance. Then run it and verify. Calculated columns are where most reporting requirements actually live, so the syntax is shown properly rather than gestured at. Almost nothing a CFO asks for is a plain retrieval. And conditional formatting is what makes a report get read. It is also the first thing to overdo: two colours, not five.
