Trees define hierarchical relationships between organizations, departments or positions, and they are used for reporting, security and navigation. Three types — an organization tree, a department tree, a position tree — and you build the ones you consume. Now the part people skip past: a tree has versions. The tree is the definition; the version is the actual structure at a point in time. Why does that exist? Because businesses reorganise, and next year you will need to report on last year's structure. If you do not understand versioning you will edit the current version during a reorganisation and quietly destroy the ability to report on what came before. The lifecycle is five steps and each does something distinct: create, add nodes, audit, activate, publish. Audit checks the structure is valid. Activate makes the version live. Publish is what makes it available to the things that consume it — miss
