Implementing Global HR: From Enterprise Model to Live Workforce · Module 5 · Divisions, Departments, Locations and Trees

Divisions and when you need them

Lesson 48 of 175 · 3 min

The previous module was the legal structure — the layer that resists change. This module is the management structure, and it is the layer designed to change. That difference is the whole framing: everything here will be reorganised, some of it annually, and the question at every step is not "is this right" but "what does this cost to maintain when the business moves." So, divisions. A division is a management grouping above departments, used for reporting and sometimes for security scoping. That is it. And the honest guidance, which is not what you will hear from somebody selling a larger configuration: many implementations do not need divisions. Departments plus a tree very often gives you the same reporting, with one fewer object to maintain and one fewer thing in every list of values. When do they earn their place? Genuinely distinct business lines, with separate leadership and separate reporting
