The application is designed to be extended through supported mechanisms. Everything in this module is upgrade-safe; anything outside it usually is not — which is the entire reason "extend, do not customize" is a principle rather than a preference. An upgrade arrives whether or not you were ready for it. Four levers, and each answers a different question. A lookup, when you need different values in an existing list. A flexfield, when you need to capture something the delivered data model does not hold. A profile option, when you need to change delivered behaviour that is designed to be configurable. And Design Studio, when you need the page to show less, or to show different things to different roles.
