Three schedule types, and the choice follows the workforce rather than a preference. Elapsed schedules — a duration per day, no specific times — suit salaried office workers, where what matters is that Tuesday is a working day, not that it starts at nine. Time schedules carry specific start and end times and suit shift and hourly workers, where the times are the point. Shift-based patterns rotate over a cycle and suit operations, healthcare and manufacturing. The building blocks: shifts, then patterns built from shifts, then the schedule that assembles the patterns. Three layers, built bottom-up. Exceptions are calendar events, which override the schedule. Now the mechanic that confuses everybody, stated explicitly. Schedules can be assigned at several levels — the assignment, the position, the department, the legal employer, the enterprise — and the most specific one wins.
