Why schedules matter more than they look

Work schedules look like a minor setup task. They are the input to every duration calculation in the system — absence duration, payroll proration, time and labor, availability, and workforce scheduling. Here is the question that makes it concrete. Somebody books a week off. Is that five days, or seven? The system cannot know unless it knows which days that person works, and that is the work schedule, resolved for that worker, on those dates. And the failure mode is unusually visible. Absence deducting the wrong number of days is one of the most visible errors an HR system can produce — because every employee checks their own leave balance. Not a report somebody runs quarterly: every person, several times a year, checking a number they care about personally. If it is wrong you will hear about it from everybody at once.
