What a work definition contains

The work definition is the recipe for making something — the operations, in sequence, with the materials and resources each consumes. And the relationship to the structure, which is the previous module's distinction paid off. The structure says what goes in. The work definition says at which operation each component is consumed. One structure. One or more work definitions. Four components: header, operations, operation items, operation resources — built in that order. Versions. Work definitions are versioned and effective-dated, so a process change does not invalidate history, the same discipline as structure effectivity. Standard versus non-standard work. Standard work orders reference a work definition. Non-standard ones do not, and are used for rework, maintenance and one-offs. Worth knowing now, because the first time somebody needs to rework a batch they will ask you how, and the answer is not "build a work definition for it". Why it matters beyond execution:…
