Implementing Manufacturing and Materials Management: From Empty Plant to Costed Work Order · Module 10 · Work Definitions
Building operations
Lesson 99 of 188 · 13 min
Add operations in sequence with meaningful sequence numbers, assign each to a work center, set the operation type — count point or not, automatic or manual transaction — set operation names and descriptions as an operator would recognise them, reorder operations to show the renumbering behaviour, and show the operation list as it appears on a dispatch list. Number operations in tens. 10, 20, 30. Inserting an operation later without renumbering everything is the reason — and it will happen, because the validation lesson is about finding operations nobody documented. Count point operations are where the operator reports progress. Too many and the shop floor spends its day transacting. Too few and you have no visibility. Ask the supervisor — this is their decision more than yours. Operation descriptions appear on the dispatch list. Write them for the operator.
