Substitutes and reference designators

Add a substitute component and set the priority, show substitution during a shortage, add reference designators to a component, and show them on a work order. Substitutes are how the plant keeps running when a preferred part is short. Very common in electronics and fasteners; rarely configured, because nobody asks. Ask. Reference designators matter in electronics and assembly where position identification is needed. Skip lightly if the client does not need them — and say so, rather than covering them at length for an audience that will never use them.
