What a structure is and is not

A structure is the list of components that make up a parent item, with quantities. That is it. Now the harder half. What it is not: the process. The structure says what goes in. The work definition, two modules on, says how and in what order. Learners and clients merge these constantly — and the merge is invisible until you try to schedule something, because a structure with no process still looks like a complete answer. A structure is not strictly required to create a work definition. One is almost always in place, though, because without it every work order lists its materials manually, which nobody wants twice. Now the distinction this lesson exists for. Engineering describes the product as designed. Manufacturing describes it as built — and the two may differ. Different packaging.
