Structure names and effectivity control

A structure name is a structure type identifier. Most manufacturers need one primary structure; some need alternates for different plants or processes. Effectivity control is how changes to the structure are dated or sequenced. The common choice is date effectivity: a component is valid between two dates. Why it matters: it is how you introduce a design change without breaking history. Work orders created before the change use the old components. Those after use the new. Both remain correct, forever — which is what makes an audit of a two-year-old build possible. There are alternative controls — unit-number and model-based effectivity, used in configure-to-order and serialized-product businesses.
