Implementing Project Portfolio Management: From Organization Structure to Recognized Revenue · Module 17 · Project Execution Management
Target utilization
Lesson 176 of 198 · 11 min
Manage target utilization percentages at the appropriate levels. Set different targets for different roles or pools. Show utilization calculated against target, the resource manager's utilization view, and a resource under and over target. UTILIZATION TARGETS ARE A COMMERCIAL DECISION, NOT A SYSTEM DEFAULT. A senior consultant expected at seventy per cent and a junior at eighty-five is a normal pattern — the numbers come from the business. Utilization is the number resource managers are measured on. Getting the target and the calculation right matters commercially. ASK WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE DENOMINATOR — holiday, training, admin. Different answers give very different utilization figures for the same person. Get it in writing; the lab requires the definition to be documented and matched exactly.
