Position synchronization

With synchronisation enabled, assignment attributes inherit from the position: change the position and the assignments follow. What can synchronise: department, job, grade, location, manager, FTE, action reason and flexfield attributes among others — and each is individually selectable, which turns out to matter enormously. The upside is consistency, and that a reorganisation becomes a position change rather than a mass assignment update. For an organisation running positions seriously, that is the whole return on the maintenance cost. Now the four surprises, each of which arrives as a complaint rather than an error. Synchronised attributes become read-only on the assignment — HR users who expect to override get blocked, nothing is broken, it is working exactly as configured, and the person on the phone does not care. Enabling it later re-synchronises existing assignments, which can move hundreds of assignments at once, overnight, correctly. The synchronisation process must run, and the gap…
