Three options — manual, automatic sequence, rule-based — and then a question that is not really about any of them. Most manufacturers have existing part numbers that people know by heart, appear on drawings, and are used by suppliers and customers. Changing them is a change management problem far bigger than a system problem. Adopt the legacy numbers unless there is a compelling reason not to. The efficiency of a clean sequence is not worth retraining a workforce and reprinting drawings. Intelligent versus non-intelligent numbering is genuinely contested, so both sides. Part numbers that encode meaning are loved by users and hated by data architects — because the meaning eventually becomes wrong. The family gets renamed. The part gets used somewhere else.
