Implementing Manufacturing and Materials Management: From Empty Plant to Costed Work Order · Module 4 · Inventory Organizations and Plants
Organization parameters
Lesson 37 of 188 · 14 min
Walk the parameter groups for Plant A one at a time: general (calendar, item master, default subinventories), item and costing controls, lot and serial control defaults, locator control, and inter-organization transfer parameters. Save, then repeat for Plant B — deliberately setting one parameter differently, to show the effect later. Lot and serial control is an organization-and-item level decision with permanent consequences. Enable it where the business genuinely needs traceability — regulated products, recall exposure, warranty — and not everywhere, because every lot-controlled transaction asks the operator for a lot number. Get it wrong in either direction and you either cannot trace a recall, or you have made the shop floor miserable. Both failure directions matter; the second is the one that gets ignored. Locator control at organization level sets the default; items can override. Decide the default deliberately. And several parameters are impractical to change after transactions. Read before saving.
